At the beginning of the 1930s the idea of a high-speed bomber that could outstrip contemporary fighters was conceived. One of the results of this concept was the twin-engine bomber Do 17 designed by the German Dornier Flugzeugwerke Company.
In the beginning of 1940 a small series of 105 Do 215B planes with liquid-cooled DB 601A engines were produced. In 1941 production of the Do 215B-5 night fighter modification had begun. They served in the night fighter unit II/NJG-1 until the beginning of 1944.
